Changes in English Language Requirements for Australian Student Visas

Changes in English Language Requirements for Australian Student Visas

At the beginning of 2024, the Australian Government introduced new regulations for study and immigration conditions in the country. Among these, the English language requirements for student visas have been adjusted to a minimum IELTS score of 6.0. For the Temporary Graduate Visa, the requirement has increased to 6.5.

  1. For the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485):

The minimum required IELTS score is 6.5 (or equivalent), with no band below 5.5 (or equivalent English language certificates).

IELTS certificates are now valid for only 1 year (previously 3 years). Applicants for the 485 visa must now provide evidence that they have completed an English language test within 1 year immediately before the visa application date.

  1. For the Student Visa (subclass 500):

The minimum required IELTS score is 6.0 (or equivalent English language certificates).

For foundation programs, the required English score is IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent English language certificates).

Additionally, this document repeals IMMI 15/062 regulations concerning the Characteristics of English Language Tests, Scores, and Passports from 2015. However, IMMI 15/062 will still apply to 485 visa applications submitted but not yet finally decided before March 23, 2024.

The Australian Government has also proposed other regulations, currently in the process of being finalized. The new regulations are expected to be announced by mid-2024.

Changes in Australian Student Visa Requirements

The Australian Government has revised the requirements for Student Visas: shifting from GTE to GST.

Effective March 23, 2024, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for Australian student visa applications will be replaced by the Genuine Student Requirement (GS). Applicants must provide clear explanations for the following factors:

Detailed information on family finances, cultural background, and work experience.

Justification for choosing the specific course in Australia and the benefits of studying this program.

For students with a history of studying in Australia, detailed information about their previous studies must be provided.
For applicants currently in Australia on a non-student visa, a clear explanation of the reasons for visa transition is required.

Any additional explanatory information the applicant wishes to include.

The GS requirement is expected to apply to all student visa applications submitted from March 23, 2024, onwards.

Student visa applications submitted before March 23, 2024, will still be assessed under the current regulations. The GTE requirement will be retained for Student Guardian visa applications.

Based on these documents, the immigration authorities will review and assess the authenticity of the information provided, determining whether you meet the criteria for a student visa.
